Magazine Layout

The entire editing department of your favourite magazine company has suddenly come down with the flu! The magazine must still reach store displays on time…what to do…what to do?

Good thing you have the following skills:

  • excellent at photography
  • can write quick, witty titles/captions
  • and have an amazing eye for layout!

It is your responsibility to design, shoot photos, and layout text/pictures for the latest edition of the magazine. You are responsible for creating the entire concept of the cover from design to print.

Where to start??

  • Search the web and find a magazine that is school appropriate (no more than 20 minutes)
  • Look at previous issues to see what the cover looks like:
    • What kind of stories are there?
    • How are the pictures positioned on the cover? Who is on the cover?
    • Is there a large title? Where is it positioned?
    • Miscellaneous (price, date, bar code, etc.)
  • Make a listing of all the features that can be found on the cover.
  • You need to mock up 5 visual layouts for the next issue (using a sheet of blank paper & a pencil only)
    • Small drawings, title is clear, pictures are represented by shapes with an X through the middle, captions are squiggly lines
    • Make these drawings neat
    • Fill in the required information.

You have until the end of class to show me what you’ve come up with so far and then you can work on the assignments that you have already been assigned.

You have no time for games!

Web Site Assignment #1 — 3 Page Site

You will create a fan page for your favourite sports team. Choose a sport and a team before starting this assignment. Make sure that you can find the following things about them before finalizing your decision:

  • name
  • players – names, stats, pictures, etc.
  • pictures of the game being played
  • news articles about the sport

Please follow the attached document in order to learn the elements that need to be completed and or changed.

Web #1 Assignment

Here is what you will be required to do:

  • create a 2 column web site with 3 pages
    • index.html
    • stats.html
    • news.html
  • change the colours of the template to your team colours.
  • remove all the template content — text, colours, pictures, placeholders, etc.
  • insert a table and change the settings to fit your stats
  • link to news articles — give a hint at the article before you link it (should be written by YOU)
  • insert at least 3 pictures per page. Pages should not be picture crazy — there will have to be text on each page as well.

The details of the above listed items can be found in the attached pdf document. Things are listed very basically…you’ll have to figure out a lot of the details in between. If you need help….ask!

Good luck.

Other Video Tutorial Sections

Flash

Bridge

Bridge is a photo organzer that comes with the suite we purchased at the school. There are a number of things that you can do from within Bridge itself (ie. make a web gallery). You can view some videos here.

Illustrator

Here is the Adobe TV video section for Illustrator. Please keep in mind that we have CS5.

Flash Catalyst

Here is the video section for Flash Catalyst. It is similar to Flash, except you do not need to know any background actionscript coding in order to use this program. You might have some initial difficulties learning the basics of this program…but hopefully it will eleviate some of your codign issues.

  • Puppet Warp Intro — alter pictures
  • Face Puppet Warp — this video shows how to make a emtion-less guy smile
  • Content Aware Fill – how to remove portions of a picture
  • Retouching Blemishes — how to remove blemishes and wrinkles from a face. This can be adapted to other elements in a picture that need to be removed

Spring Break Assignment

Describe 3 things that you did during spring break. You are not allowed to use any words. Everything has to be visual. Please choose the program on which you feel that you can showcase your skills the best. If you have an option with only 1 file you will name it “beanr_spring”. If you have a 3 file assignment you will name it “beanr_spring1”, “beanr_spring2”, “beanr_spring3”. Replace my name with yours of course. Here are your options:

PowerPoint

  • Must have title – simple like Spring Break One, Name, Date, etc.
  • Must have animation – motion to some degree.
  • Must have at least 10-15 slides for each option. If you choose to do a stop motion – obviously 15 slides will not show well. We will talk if this is your choice.
  • 3 files

Publisher

  • 1 file with 4 pages (first page is a title page)
  • make it 8 1/2″ x 11″

Flash

  • 3 separate files
  • has to have at least 50 frames
  • has to have animation
  • must have a title

Photoshop

  • make the 8 1/2″ x 11 1/2″
  • 1/2″ on bottom/top is the title section — words can be located there.
  • 3 files

Illustrator

  • 8 1/2″ x 11 1/2″ — bottom/top is the title section
  • 3 separate files

Keep in mind the following things:

  • school appropriate
  • no words
  • Time constraints – you only have 3 days. Do an excellent job, but make sure you get it done within the timeframe!

You will be showing this assignment to 2 other students in the room. They will be asked to answer some questions.

Good Luck!

Using Filters in Photoshop

You are going to get a little more familiar with some of the Filters that are available in Photoshop.

  1. Copy a picture, create a new document, paste the picture into the document.
  2. Flatten the image.
  3. Duplicate the layer.
  4. Call it “Filter1”
  5. Duplicate again – call it “Filter2”
  6. Click on Filter1 – you are going to apply a filter to the layer
  7. Find a new picture and paste it into the document – rename the layer to “Blur”
    • Select around the object or the part that you are going to be using.
    • Select from the menu — Filter — Choose one of the filters. Try a few of them before you make a final selection.

Once you have completed this save your work in our format — beanr_filters.psd.
